Summer Skating Schools

Hamilton Center's 2008 Skate-Your-Heart-Out Summer Figure Skating School
This is an opportunity for figure skaters who would like to enhance their skating skills through private lessons. Please contact your coach for the sessions that would be appropriate for your skating ability. Lincoln Center Figure Skating Club will be offering a U.S.F.S.A. test session that will be announced at the beginning of the summer. For additional information, call (812) 376-2686.

Group Figure Skating Class Descriptions

Skills to Master:  
Tots/Kindergarten (ages 4-6): 25 minutes instruction on the small rink for the beginner skater. Min. 4 / Max 8
Basic 1: Forward skating & glides, backward skating, forward swizzles & snowplow stop.
Basic 2: Forward one-foot glides, backward swizzles & glides, and two foot turns.
Basic 3: Forward stroking, forward pumps on circle, backward one-foot glides, two foot spins.
Basic 4: Forward crossovers, outside 3 turns, backward pumps on circle, forward edges on circle.
Basic 5: Back edges or circle, back crossovers, beginning one foot spin.
Basic 6: Inside 3 turns, T-Stop, Bunny hop and spiral lunge.
Basic 7: Mohawks, pivots, combo moves with crossovers and turns.
Basic 8: Moving three turns, moving Mohawks, Waltz jump, 1 foot spin.
Novice Club: 45 minutes of instruction including power stroking moves in the field, jumps and spins. Skater must have passed Basic 8 to be eligible for this class.
Power Development: 30 minutes with emphasis on stroking technique development, stamina & edge control.
Adult Classes: 25 min. of instruction and 25 minutes of practice time. Skaters learn the basics of ice skating while working on overall fitness, balance and coordination.

Intro to Hockey Class Descriptions

Learn the fundamentals of hockey skating. Stick and helmet provided. Classes held once a week. Please come at least 20 minutes early so you will have time to dress before class. 30 minute class

Intro 1: Skaters are introduced to ice hockey with emphasis on skating skills. Basics of balancing, forward skating, backward skating, turning, falling safely and getting up are included. No skating experience is necessary for enrollment in Intro 1.
Intro 2: Players continue to work on forward skating, backward skating and turning, more powerful strides, balancing on one skate and strengthening overall skating ability. Stick handling, passing the puck and receiving passes is introduced. Skating experience is necessary for enrollment.
Intro 3: Players continue improving fundamentals and learn to use them in game situations. Advanced skating techniques such as forward crossovers, power turns, strong backward striding and stopping are introduced. Skating and stick work are combined to help players develop the speed, quickness and agility to play the game as it is being played today. Successful completion of Intro 3 is recommended before players join Columbus Youth Hockey to play organized games.

Summer Group Figure Skating

Skating Lessons
Hamilton Center's group skating lessons follow the U.S. Figure Skating Association's Skate with US program which is a beginning skating program that is fun, challenging and rewarding while enabling skaters of all ages to learn the fundamentals of skating and begin a lifetime commitment to health and fitness. The program has 8 levels of basic skills followed by specialized programs in freestyle, hockey, power skating and ice dancing.

Hockey Camps and Classes

Intro to Hockey Summer Camp for all ages and skill levels:
Tu/Th, June 3-July 24, 5:30-7pm, Hamilton Center
Players will be divided by skill level during the first week. Skills will be taught according to ability. Players will interact while learning and playing various scrimmage games. Registration begins April 2008. No class 7/15 or 7/17

The Sport International Hockey Academy

The Sport International Hockey Academy is coming to Hamilton Center Ice Arena for their 19th summer of hockey instruction. SIHA is a nationally recognized instructional program for players 6-17 years, and will be available for the Columbus hockey community, August 4-8. Adult Intro to Hockey - Level 1
A class for those who have never played hockey and may not know how to skate. A basic skills class teaching the fundamentals of skating forward, backward and stopping. Youth Scholarship

The Columbus Park Foundation and the Columbus Parks and Recreation Dept. collaborate to offer full and 50% scholarships for children to participate in Parks and Recreation programs. Eligible children may receive up to three scholarship classes per calendar year, not to exceed a total of $105. Applicants must be a Bartholomew Co. resident. For an application form and additional information, please visit the Parks and Recreation office at Donner Center.
