Columbus, IN — The city of Columbus encourages residents, businesses, and organizations to participate in Indiana’s statewide tornado drill on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Columbus City Hall will be participating in the drill. Other city facilities have been encouraged to participate as well.
The drill is scheduled for approximately 10:15 a.m. EDT, when the National Weather Service will issue a test tornado warning across the state. Local outdoor warning sirens may sound, and alerts may be broadcast through various emergency communication systems. This is only a test and provides an opportunity for residents to practice what they would do during an actual tornado warning.
Residents are encouraged to take a few minutes during the drill to review their severe weather safety plans and identify where they would seek shelter if severe weather threatens the Columbus area. The safest place during a tornado is a basement or storm shelter. If a basement is not available, individuals should move to an interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows and exterior walls.
Severe Weather Preparedness Week serves as a reminder that planning ahead can make a difference during an emergency. Taking time to develop and practice a safety plan helps ensure everyone in your household or workplace knows where to go and what to do when warnings are issued. Information on preparedness will be shared on The City of Columbus, IN Facebook page all week. All information is provided by the National Weather Service Indianapolis, IN.
The city of Columbus encourages residents to:
– Identify a safe shelter location at home, work, or school
– Make sure all household members know the tornado safety plan
– Keep emergency supplies such as a flashlight, sturdy shoes, and extra batteries nearby
– Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including weather radios, mobile alerts, and local media
Spring severe weather can develop quickly, and advance preparation is one of the most effective ways to stay safe. By participating in the statewide tornado drill, the Columbus community can take an important step toward improving readiness for severe weather.
