City of Columbus Employee Receives Life Saving Award for Saving Coworker’s Life

Tuesday morning, at the Columbus Board of Public Works meeting, Officer Chris McDaniel, of Columbus Animal Care Services, was recognized as a recipient of the Life Saving Award. The medal was presented in front of a large crowd by Chief Andy Lay of the Columbus Fire Department.

On October 25, 2022, Officer McDaniel and a fellow officer were responding to an Animal Care services investigation. The fellow officer began experiencing a medical emergency. Officer McDaniel immediately called 911 and began performing CPR until EMS could arrive on the scene. These actions contributed to saving the life of his coworker. The Life Saving Award is given by the Columbus Fire Department to individuals whose selfless, courageous, and outstanding actions result in the successful saving of a human life. According to Chief Lay, “The Columbus Fire Department provides CPR training to individuals and businesses throughout the community. In this instance, prior training and Mr. McDaniel’s ability to identify a true medical emergency, resulted in the initiation of quality CPR that saved a life.”

Mayor Jim Lienhoop stated, “Chris McDaniel’s quick action is a compliment not only to him, but to the training provided by the Columbus Fire Department. His clear, quick thinking and reliance on his life saving training is to be commended.” Kudos were also given to Mike Kutsko, deputy chief of administration for Columbus Fire Department, for his work with providing the CPR skills courses to employees of the city of Columbus.
