{"id":643,"date":"2022-02-22T12:40:44","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T17:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.columbus.in.gov\/fire\/?p=643"},"modified":"2022-02-22T12:42:12","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T17:42:12","slug":"firefighters-recognized-for-rescue-of-unconscious-man-found-in-burning-apartment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.columbus.in.gov\/fire\/firefighters-recognized-for-rescue-of-unconscious-man-found-in-burning-apartment\/","title":{"rendered":"Firefighters Receive Medal of Valor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Firefighters Recognized for Rescue of Unconscious Man Found in Burning Apartment-<\/p>\n<p>The Columbus Fire Department presented commendations to 3 \u00a0fire department members at this morning board of public works and safety meeting held at Columbus City Hall. \u00a0The presentation was facilitation by Fire Chief Andy Lay and Deputy Chief Mark Ziegler to recognize Columbus Firefighters who rescued an unconscious man found inside an apartment fire at the Williamsburg Apartments on February \u00a02, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The Medal of Valor was presented to members of CFD\u2019s Engine Co. 4 , who were the first arriving firefighters at an early morning \u00a0basement level apartment fire. When Firefighters arrived on the scene, witnesses reported that they could hear a man calling out from inside a locked apartment. With no additional firefighters yet on the scene, the commanding officer of Engine Co. 4 made the decision to breach the locked door and search for occupants. Within a short time after entering the smoke filled apartment, the now unconscious man was pulled from the building where emergency care was initiated by firefighters. The victim was transported to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation injuries. The man was ultimately release from the hospital and continues to recover from his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Medal of Valor Recipients :\u00a0 Lieutenant Rick Mullis, Firefighter Derrick Chitwood, Firefighter Eric Green.
