Welcome to the Planning Department Applications page.\u00a0 We look forward to working with you!<\/p>\n

All applications, including those for projects in Columbus, Bartholomew County, and the Edinburgh \/ Bartholomew \/ Columbus Joint District must be submitted using the City of Columbus Opengov services portal – please see the Apply Online<\/strong> link below.\u00a0 The portal also provides additional information on the various types of applications and their purpose.<\/p>\n

All applications require the upload of a completed Property Owner Authorization<\/a> for each included property owner.\u00a0 Additional forms may be found below.<\/p>\n

Please note that your project may also require additional local approvals, such as a building permit, storm water permit, or utility connection authorization.\u00a0 If your project is located in the City of Columbus, please visit the City\u2019s Development and Building Services Resource Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Please note, we began using Opengov on November 17, 2025.\u00a0 Its new for us too.\u00a0 We hope that it improves the efficiency and transparency of our permitting process.\u00a0 Please be patient as we make this change.\u00a0 Please call our office if you experience any issues or just have a suggestion.\u00a0 We value your input.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

Pre-Application Meetings<\/h3>\n

The Planning Department welcomes the opportunity to meet before you submit your application in order to better understand your project and provide guidance.\u00a0 Please contact us at 812.376.2550 or planning@columbus.in.gov<\/a> to schedule a pre-application meeting.\u00a0 While always recommended, pre-application meetings are required for all Board of Zoning Appeals applications and major subdivision preliminary plats.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Application Deadlines<\/h3>\n

The monthly deadlines for applications to be considered by a Board of Zoning Appeals, Plan Commission, or Plat Committee can be found on the Calendars provided below.\u00a0 All required materials, including the application fee and property owner consent, must be provided by the applicable deadline for an application to be considered complete.\u00a0 Incomplete applications will not be processed.<\/p>\n

After submitting your application, you will receive an automated email from Opengov indicating that payment is due.\u00a0 That email will look like the image to the right (please be cautious of scams and call the Planning Department if you have any concerns about a request for payment).\u00a0 Following the link provided, you will be required to log into your Opengov account prior to making payment.\u00a0 \u00a0Payment at the Planning Department by cash or check is also welcome.\u00a0 Please note that your application will not be processed until the fee has been paid.<\/p>\n
