Suspect Arrested After Vehicle Pursuit

A local man is in custody after he allegedly fled in a vehicle from Columbus police early Monday morning.  At approximately 12:50 a.m., Columbus Police Officer Robert Mitchell observed a red Honda Civic disregard a red traffic signal at the intersection of US 31 and Central Avenue.  Mitchell activated his police car’s emergency lights in an effort to stop the Honda, however, the driver refused to pull over.  Mitchell pursued the suspect at speeds up to 70 miles per hour before the suspect pulled into a parking lot on Nicholas Lane near Candlelight Drive.  Officers conducted a high risk traffic stop and the driver, Mitchel R. Wood, a 26 year old Columbus resident was taken into custody.  Wood was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary felony charge of Resisting Law Enforcement.  He was also issued traffic citations for Disregarding an Automatic Traffic Signal, Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle and Exceeding an Urban Posted Speed Limit.
