Garton Veterans Plaza, is undergoing a complete redesign. The original plaza was designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates (MVVA) in 2000. The site is approximately 1.5 acres and encompasses two separate plazas at the north and south of State Road 46, which sees nearly 30,000 vehicles pass through daily. This area serves as a main entry into Columbus but has been overgrown and underutilized for years. The redesign and redevelopment of this site will integrate the Gateway Plaza into other developments in this area.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><b>The plaza redesign seeks to achieve several goals:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transform this gateway entry to the city to be more attractive, safe, and accessible for all while maintaining green space and allowing more activity from and interaction with downtown residents, employees, and visitors.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with organizations with a stake in the property to creatively solve site deficits and design for greater use, enjoyment, and connectivity to the 1821 Trail, downtown, and future riverfront development.<\/li>\n<li>Improve pedestrian-friendly design features with the vehicular experience, ensuring the site design creates a positive experience and complements the key entry features of the Bob Stewart Bridge, Veterans Memorial Park Plaza, and the Bartholomew County Courthouse.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:20px;\"><h2>The Future of Downtown Columbus:<\/h2>\n<p>The Gateway Plaza is listed as a Priority Site in the Columbus Downtown 2030 Plan and is key to the redevelopment of the State Road 46 (2nd Street) entrance into Downtown. Columbus Design Institute played a critical role in managing the project, while Redevelopment extended funding support for the project. The City and Community Development also partnered to provide anchored support throughout the designer selection and redesign process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>February:<\/strong> The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the redesign was issued.<\/li>\n<li><strong>March:<\/strong> An onsite RFQ meeting was held to walk the site and answer questions from interested architecture, design and engineering firms. The RFQ was due in March and received an impressive 18 submissions!<\/li>\n<li><strong>April:<\/strong> Merrit Chase, a landscape architecture and urban design firm, was selected to complete the redesign. A resolution was approved by the Columbus Redevelopment Commission to approve $450,000 in TIF funds to support the redesign and redevelopment of the plaza.<\/li>\n<li><strong>June:<\/strong> On June 24th, Merritt Chase provided a project timeline update to the Columbus Redevelopment Commission and hosted their first Public Engagement Session featured as a picnic in the plaza. The event was well-attended and served to gather feedback from community stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li><strong>October:<\/strong> Merritt Chase hosts a second community engagement session at the Commons following a lunch session to review the schematic design concepts with key stakeholders. Three concepts are presented: The Field, The River and The Hill.<\/li>\n<li><strong>November:<\/strong> Merritt Chase takes feedback from stakeholder sessions and the public engagement session to incorporate into a final iteration of their proposed concept, which will consider features from The Field, The River and The Hill concepts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default panel-19fadc2be8b285dd4 fusion-toggle-has-divider\" style=\"--awb-title-color:var(--awb-color8);--awb-content-color:#000000;\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\" id=\"toggle_19fadc2be8b285dd4\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"19fadc2be8b285dd4\" role=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-11357-1\" data-target=\"#19fadc2be8b285dd4\" href=\"#19fadc2be8b285dd4\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box active-icon fa-angle-down fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><i class=\"fa-fusion-box inactive-icon fa-angle-right fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">2025 Project Activity:<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"19fadc2be8b285dd4\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"toggle_19fadc2be8b285dd4\"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>January:<\/strong> Bonnie Boatwright was engaged to serve as the Project Manager for the Downtown Entrance Plaza redesign through the construction administration phase.<\/li>\n<li><strong>February:<\/strong> Merritt Chase completes the final iteration of the design for the project and begins to obtain cost estimates for construction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spring:<\/strong> Design Team pursues value engineering initiatives to encourage project construction cost savings. Continued stakeholder update sessions are held to discuss scope revisions and fundraising. Additionally, the project is awarded the Faith in Place grant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Summer:<\/strong> A scope modification was introduced to relocate the POW\/MIA monuments to the Courthouse Lawn. The Design Team works through related design modifications, value engineering, stakeholder updates, and prepares for the introduction of the project&#8217;s construction timeline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fall:<\/strong> Updated design concepts and renderings were presented to the Columbus Redevelopment Commission.
