Building upon the great work accomplished through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbus.in.gov\/envision-columbus\/\">Envision Columbus<\/a>, the goal for this new plan is to provide a framework for Downtown Columbus that remains focused, site-specific and time-bound. Through community engagement, stakeholder feedback and market research, Sasaki and their team have provided a plan for strategic downtown development, programming, infrastructure and activation that we are excited to begin implementing.<\/p>\n<p>On July 21, 2025, the plan results were presented to the public along with the City\u2019s planned approach for implementation of these findings. The implementation, as with the research, will be a community-led initiative. Guided by three teams of subject-matter experts from various stakeholder groups, the strategy will focus on real estate &amp; economic development, public realm &amp; infrastructure, and programming several phases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbus.in.gov\/redevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/07\/Stories-from-Downtown-Columbus.pdf\">community listening<\/a>, stakeholder engagement and public input, the research team identified a series of strategic objectives for the downtown, including making the downtown district a <strong>vibrant residential neighborhood<\/strong>, enhancing and expanding <strong>access to Mill Race Park<\/strong>, and <strong>diversifying downtown offerings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Market research indicated the most promising short-term demand for downtown Multifamily Residential development, with medium-term demand for additional Hotel spaces and longer- term demand for Office and Retail space. From the research, three primary development objectives were identified: <strong>Expand &amp; enhance 4<sup>th<\/sup> Street<\/strong> entertainment district; <strong>Activate historic Washington<\/strong> <strong>Street <\/strong>through strategic infill, redevelopment and public realm programming; and create an <strong>Avenue of the Architects along the 5<sup>th<\/sup> street corridor<\/strong> that provides residential housing opportunities alongside further commercial and public realm development.<\/p>\n<p>The findings provided a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbus.in.gov\/redevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/07\/CDSP2030_-DRAFT_FinalRecommendations-7.21.25.pdf\">comprehensive framework<\/a> for future development of Downtown Columbus with five clearly defined goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop and redevelop sites throughout the downtown, embracing <strong>urban infill \u2013 <\/strong>with an emphasis on housing<\/li>\n<li>Concentrate <strong>active uses <\/strong>on the ground floor of three focus corridors: <strong>Washington Street, 4<sup>th<\/sup> Street, and 5<sup>th<\/sup> Street<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Forge <strong>stronger connections<\/strong> between 4<sup>th<\/sup> and 5<sup>th<\/sup> Streets and <strong>Mill Race Park<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Create <strong>new destinations<\/strong> along the three focus corridors and within Mill Race Park<\/li>\n<li>Connect and enhance elements of the public realm with a focus on a <strong>comfortable pedestrian experience <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With these goals in mind, the plan outlines specific development concepts for a number of priority sites that have been identified as opportunities for near-term development, including many properties currently owned by the Columbus Redevelopment Commission. Led by a steering committee, each working group will focus on one specific area of the implementation plan: real estate &amp; economic development, public realm &amp; infrastructure, and programming &amp; activation.<\/p>\n<p>The implementation teams will meet monthly to prioritize recommendations, identify funding sources, timelines and partners for projects over the short, medium, and long-term. Sasaki is a well-known firm which specializes in planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, and strategy. SB Friedman represents the analytical arm of the team and is a real estate, economic development, and public-private finance advisory firm with implementation strategies rooted in market realty and financial feasibility. Storyboard is a woman-owned business enterprise with a focus on design and implementation of a full suite of community engagement strategies. Additionally, the Redevelopment Commission engaged Bonnie Boatwright to serve as project manager.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column
