various state and federal agencies. Major design concepts include:<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n<ul class=\"font_7 color_14\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\">Improve safety and universal access to the river<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\">Stabilize the riverbanks<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\">Restore habitat in and along the river<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\">Connect the people trail<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\">Provide new recreation opportunities<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\">Improve the aesthetics of the riverfront<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:10px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:10px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p class=\"font_7\"><strong><span class=\"color_14\">This project will positively impact the community through:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"font_7 color_14\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><strong>Improved Safety<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Low head dams have long been known as \u201cdrowning machines\u201d because of the powerful currents created in the water below them that can trap unsuspecting swimmers.\u00a0 Removing the low head dam at the riverfront will make this portion of the river much safer for the community.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\"><strong>Connectivity<\/strong> \u2013 A trail along the riverfront and routed under both the 2nd and 3rd Street bridges will provide a safe and picturesque connection for the People Trail in this area of the city.\u00a0 Residents and visitors will be able to utilize this connection between Mill Race and downtown Columbus to walk, jog, or cycle along the riverfront, and provide better access to downtown Columbus amenities such as restaurants and retail.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\"><strong>Increased Accessibility<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Universally designed pedestrian trail will provide access to a community green space that has previously been inaccessible to most residents of Columbus and will allow users of varied physical abilities to interact directly with the river.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\"><strong>Additional Recreation Opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Removal of the low head dam and completing the People Trail connection will provide additional active and passive recreation opportunities including the ability to canoe, kayak, tube and fish throughout this area, as well as new spaces to sit and observe the river and iconic Robert Stewart Bridge. The Riverfront will be a preferred destination for residents and visitors alike, and an ideal place to stroll, unwind, and reflect.\u00a0 The Riverfront will have something for everyone and best of all, it will be a place to be enjoyed for generations to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\"><strong>Construction<\/strong> \u2013 During construction, the riverfront project will support approximately 89 jobs, infuse $1.6 million dollars into the local economy and create approximately $280,000 in state and local tax revenue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"font_7 color_14\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"font_7\"><span class=\"color_14\"><strong>Local Economic Benefits<\/strong> \u2013 Young people today are relocating to communities that offer lifestyle opportunities. Job opportunities are a secondary consideration. Nationwide, millennials and baby boomers represent the largest populations, and both largely desire to live in walk-able, urban communities with a variety of opportunity for recreation, hospitality, social connection, arts, culture, and other activities. By working now to create these conditions in our community, Columbus will be at an advantage in terms of future population growth and the ability to support local industry.
