A thriving downtown begins with the buildings that define its character. Through the Downtown Improvement Grant Program, the Office of Downtown Development is helping property owners invest in their buildings, preserve Columbus’ architectural heritage, and create welcoming spaces that support businesses, residents, and visitors alike.
This work directly advances Recommendation RE-04 of the Columbus Downtown 2030 Plan, which calls for continued support of improvements to privately owned buildings throughout downtown. By providing matching grants for both small and large-scale rehabilitation projects, the program encourages investment that might otherwise be delayed or financially out of reach.
The Downtown Improvement Grant Program supports projects that improve the long-term quality and functionality of commercial buildings. Eligible improvements include façade restoration, storefront and window replacements, accessibility upgrades, interior renovations, mechanical and electrical improvements, historic preservation, and other permanent building enhancements. Rather than simply improving appearances, these investments help ensure downtown buildings remain functional, accessible, and ready to support businesses for years to come.
The impact of the program can already be seen across downtown. Recent grant awards have supported projects ranging from masonry and historic window restoration in the Viewpoint Books building to significant interior renovations at 4th Street Bar & Grill. Other applications include accessibility improvements, exterior wall repairs, and interior upgrades that will prepare additional downtown spaces for future tenants and visitors. Together, these projects represent almost 2.5 million of dollars in private investment being reinvested into the heart of Columbus.
Beyond the physical improvements, the program strengthens the community by preserving the historic character that makes downtown unique while creating spaces that are more welcoming and accessible.

The Downtown Improvement Grant Program operates on a quarterly application cycle, providing consistent opportunities for property owners to pursue improvements throughout the year. As more projects are completed, each investment contributes to a stronger, more vibrant downtown that honors its historic character while adapting to the needs of today’s businesses and tomorrow’s opportunities.
