One of the recommendations in the Columbus Downtown 2030 Strategic Plan (AP-03) calls for reducing barriers to outdoor programming and events by creating a simpler, more accessible event approval process.
The recommendation recognizes a challenge shared by many community organizations, businesses, and event organizers: while there was great enthusiasm for activating downtown, the process for hosting events could be confusing to navigate. Application requirements, permitting, coordination among departments, and event costs often created obstacles, especially for smaller organizations with limited resources.
Because vibrant public spaces depend on regular activity, the Strategic Plan identified streamlined event approvals as an important step toward creating a more active, welcoming downtown.
That recommendation is now becoming reality.
To implement AP-03, the Columbus Downtown 2030 Implementation Team partnered with City staff from Engineering, the Columbus Police Department, and City Security to review the City’s existing event policies and identify opportunities to simplify the process while maintaining public safety.
The committee responsible for the City’s Event Policy created a more user-friendly experience for event organizers. The result is an updated event policy that provides more efficient path for community groups, nonprofits, businesses, and organizers to bring events downtown.
The impact has been immediate.
More than 60 community events have already been approved for 2026, with many taking place in Downtown Columbus. From festivals and concerts to markets, community celebrations, and neighborhood gatherings, these events will continue to bring people together while supporting local businesses and creating the energy envisioned in the Downtown 2030 Strategic Plan.
This accomplishment reflects two of the Strategic Plan’s guiding values.
Collaboration made the update possible, bringing together multiple City departments and the Downtown 2030 Implementation Team to improve a process that serves the entire community.
The updated policy also advances Accessibility for All by lowering barriers for organizations of all sizes. A simpler, clearer process means more community groups have the opportunity to activate public spaces and create experiences that invite residents and visitors alike to gather downtown.
Every new event adds another reason to visit downtown, support local businesses, and experience the vibrant, welcoming community envisioned in the Downtown 2030 Strategic Plan.
