September is National Preparedness Month. Emergencies can happen at any place and time.  Having an emergency plan in place can help keep you and your family out of harm’s way. There are three key items that a family can do to be “Ready”: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and know what actions to take during different types of emergencies. Emergency supply kits should include enough supplies to sustain your family for up to three days. Here are tips on what items you should include in an emergency supply kit.

  • One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days
  • Three day supply of non-perishable food. Remember a can opener for canned goods
  • Battery powered or hand crank radio/weather radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Cleaning and personal sanitation supplies as well as personal hygiene items
  • Prescription medications
  • Appropriate clothing for weather conditions
