S.W.A.T. Team
The SWAT team is prepared to handle highly volatile situations including high-risk search warrants, armed suicidal persons, barricaded persons, hostage situations and many other high-risk scenarios. The SWAT team is comprised of Columbus Police Department Officers and Bartholomew County Sheriff Deputies who train together regularly.
Bomb Squad
The Columbus Police Department Hazardous Devices Unit, or bomb squad, was formed with the approval of the Federal Bureau of Investigations in the spring of 2004. The unit currently has three certified bomb technician, and one support member. The unit also has a post blast trained investigator for crime scene analysis.
Negotiators
The Crisis Negotiation Team maintains 24/7 responsibility for the team while fulfilling their full-time duties within the police department. The team is utilized for barricaded suspects, hostage situations, potentially suicidal persons, and the psychologically handicapped.
K-9 Officers
CPD currently has three K-9 Officer teams. Handlers are responsible for taking care of the canine assigned to them. The canine teams train during their shift and two workdays a month. The canine teams are on call 24 hours a day to respond to any incident where the dog may be able to assist.
Honor Guard
The Columbus Police Department Honor Guard is a volunteer assignment comprised of a select number of uniformed officers who serve as liaisons for the City of Columbus and represent the police department at public events, sporting events, police funerals and memorial services throughout the state of Indiana, as approved by the Chief of Police.

Field Training Officers
The Field Training Officer Program (FTO) is designed to provide on-the-job training for all new officers. Even officers with experience from another department are required to complete the FTO program. The program offers training on all aspects of law enforcement, some that may be unique to Columbus, Indiana.
