The Commissioners of the Columbus Housing Authority announced the retirement of Executive Director, Deborah Holt, effective June 1, 2018. Ms. Holt joined the Columbus Housing Authority in April, 1999. Prior to that time, she was the Housing Manager for the Decatur, IL housing authority, where she oversaw 500 public housing units. Since then, she has built and led a talented and passionate team that strives to fulfill the mission of the Columbus Housing Authority, which is to operate a financially-sound public housing agency that provides a drug-free, safe, affordable environment and to promote opportunities for families and individuals of all abilities who desire to achieve self-sufficiency.Holt also represents the Housing Authority on numerous community partnerships designed to increase access to affordable housing, to improve housing standards and to address issues around homelessness.
Alan Degner began duties as the Executive Director on June 4, 2018. Degner is a graduate of the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University. He has served in a variety of public- and private-sector leadership roles and has worked with local, state and Federal governmental agencies. He is committed to individual and team development and has demonstrated skills in strategic organizational growth. Degner also serves as a volunteer with numerous community organizations including the Bartholomew County Historical Society, Centra Credit Union and the Columbus Area Visitors Center. Degner and his family have lived in Columbus since 2007.
Chairperson Beth Stroh said of the upcoming transition in leadership, “Change is difficult, and it’s especially challenging when respected leaders leave organizations where they have had a distinct impact on both clients and colleagues. The Commissioners join me in thanking Deborah for her outstanding leadership and we wish her well as she begins a more relaxing phase of life. We also appreciate each of the dedicated team members at the Columbus Housing Authority, and we know they will continue to play an integral role in achieving the CHA mission. As we look forward, we welcome Al’s experience and his fresh perspective as we endeavor to become the best community of our size for all our residents, including those striving for self-sufficiency.”
