COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department will conduct a monthlong safe‑driving blitz throughout September aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors and preventing crashes that cause injuries.

The police department identified several high‑risk areas through an analysis of past crash data. Increased patrols will focus on speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, disregarding traffic signals and seat belt violations.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to public safety and the need for drivers to slow down and pay attention,” said Mayor Mary Ferdon. “We are seeing an increase in dangerous driving habits which is leading to preventable crashes in Columbus, and immediate action is necessary. This enforcement surge is an important step toward protecting the public.”

Police Chief Steven Norman said the department’s priority is reducing dangerous driving, preventing injuries and saving lives.

“The enforcement surge is a necessary response to the risks we see on our roads daily. We are deploying resources strategically and without delay to reduce dangerous driving and serious collisions,” Chief Norman said. “Our officers are responding to clear and urgent safety concerns. The behaviors we are targeting: speeding, distraction, impairment, are all dangerous driving behaviors that lead directly to injuries that should never occur.”

Officers will maintain a visible presence throughout the month and will engage with motorists to encourage safe driving habits.
