Columbus, IN — Following a comprehensive nationwide search and a collaborative hiring process, Mayor Mary Ferdon has appointed Nikki Murphy to serve as the next Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Columbus. The appointment was approved by the Parks Board during its public meeting on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

Murphy brings more than two decades of leadership in parks and recreation, with a career spanning strategic planning, capital project management, and inclusive community engagement. She currently serves as Associate Director of Recreation for Columbus Parks and Recreation, where she has led transformative initiatives including the $40M+ NexusPark redevelopment and the creation of the city’s first true community center.

“Nikki Murphy is a visionary leader with a deep commitment to accessibility, innovation, and public service,” said Mayor Ferdon. “Her experience and collaborative spirit make her an ideal choice to guide our parks system into its next chapter.”

“Having been deeply invested in serving this community through my previous roles, I’m honored to continue that work as Director,” said Murphy. “I look forward to leading a team committed to providing equitable, exceptional, fun, and welcoming parks and programs that strengthen connections and enrich the lives of our residents every day.”

The search process drew nearly 100 applicants and was guided by a diverse hiring committee representing the Parks Board, City Hall, and the community/visitor’s center. The final appointment required agreement between the Park Board and the Mayor.

Murphy’s career includes prior leadership roles with Washington Township Park in Avon, Indiana as Director, and the National Center on Accessibility, where she served as a national expert on outdoor accessibility and ADA compliance. She holds dual master’s degrees in Recreational Sports Management and Outdoor Recreation from Indiana University and has served on the Indiana Parks and Recreation Association Board of Directors.

Murphy will assume the role of Director of Columbus Parks and Recreation on October 20, 2025.
