Columbus, In — The city of Columbus is proud to announce the launch of the Columbus Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) 2.0, a new initiative aimed at supporting local homeownership for low- to moderate-income families in need of essential home improvements. The city is investing $500,000 for the program and is now open for applications, concluding on December 15, 2026.
The CHIP 2.0 Program is an expansion of the current CHIP program to include residents whose income ranges from 80%-120% Area Median Income (AMI). Both programs are specifically designed to facilitate non-invasive home improvements, ensuring no disturbance to lead paint, if applicable. The maximum award is $20,000 for both programs. Eligible improvements include roof repairs or replacements, HVAC system repairs or replacements, ADA modifications up to the home’s threshold, and water heater replacements. Additionally, radon testing and mitigation will be available to all selected homeowners.
To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Reside within Columbus city limits
- Own the home and have home insurance
- Not live in a floodplain as defined by the city map
- Agree to reside in the home for a minimum of 24 months’ post-improvement for CHIP 2.0 and 36 months’ post-improvement for the original CHIP, with a lien in place to secure this commitment. Should homeowners sell within this period, a prorated amount will be reclaimed during the sale closing process.
Applications for the CHIP 2.0 Program can be submitted online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MR6XDWS. Applications for the original CHIP program can be submitted by filling out the form online located at www.columbus.in.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/CHIP-2024-application-pkge.pdf. Funding will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until all allocated funds have been exhausted. For questions and comments regarding CHIP or CHIP 2.0, contact Paul W.
